Stay Safe
Small Changes = Big Impact

If you've decided to walk more or bicycle more -- the earth and the air want to thank you! And Planet Connecticut wants to make sure you stay safe on the road, so here are some tips for hoofing it or pedaling around Connecticut:

Walking Safety

Walking won't pollute the air or clog the highways. Plus, it's good for you and will help you stay in shape. Here are a few rules to keep you safe when you walk:

Always wear light colored clothing in the evening or early morning to help drivers see you. If possible, wear something with a reflective strip.

Cross only at crosswalks, and walk within the white lines. If there is no crosswalk, stop, look both ways, and listen before crossing.

When there is no sidewalk, walk on the left side of the road, facing the oncoming traffic.

Bicycling Safety

For short distances, bicycling is a great, non-polluting choice. But be safe when you bike:

Wear a proper helmet.

If there's a bicycle lane, use it. If not, ride in the same direction as the flow of traffic, and stay to the far right side of the road.

Stop at stop signs and obey all other traffic signs.

Use hand signals before you plan to turn.

Stay visible -- wear light colored clothing and use bike lights and reflectors.

Share the ride!
Six out of seven major air pollutants come from cars.
